At Greywell pharmacy we offer Cholesterol testing, there are no symptoms for high cholesterol which is why it is important to get checked. This can be because of your age, weight or another condition you may have such as high blood pressure or diabetes. Ultimately being aware of your cholesterol level can save your life from developing heart disease in the future.

Aim's is to help patients who are taking many different medications at

different times of the day & have trouble keeping track of what to take & when.

 

What is High cholesterol?

In simple terms high cholesterol is when you have too much of a fatty substance called cholesterol in your blood. It's mainly caused by eating fatty food, not exercising enough, being overweight, smoking and drinking alcohol. It can also run-in families. Having high cholesterol does not cause symptoms, and then only way you can find out is from a blood test.

How is my cholesterol checked?

At Greywell pharmacy, one of our fully trained pharmacy team with take your cholesterol check in the privacy of our consultation room. We will ask you some questions about your lifestyle.

 

The test is taken using the finger prick test, by taking a small drop of blood by pricking your finger. A drop of blood is put on a strip of paper. This is then put into a machine which checks your cholesterol in a few minutes.

 

You will get your results immediately, where we will talk to you about how you can lower it, from making some lifestyle changes or taking medication.

 

Can I lower my cholesterol?

There are several ways to lower your cholesterol such as lifestyle changes such as:

 

  • Cutting down on fatty foods that contain saturated fat, such as fatty meat, cakes, processed foods, cream & cheese to name a few.

  • Having a balanced diet of oily fish, like mackerel & salmon, brown rice, bread & pasta, nuts, seeds, fruits and vegetables.

  • Exercising more, from simply walking to swimming, find something you enjoy doing.

  • Stop smoking

  • Reduce you alcohol intake.

How long does it take?

Generally, the check should take no longer than 15-20min however it may take longer while we discuss & explain to you about your results and offer any help and advice you need to help ensure you can manage your cholesterol level & answer any questions if your unclear or you have concerns, & when appropriate, we may refer you to your GP if levels are outside the normal range.

Do I have to make an appointment?

You don’t need to book, you can simply pop into our pharmacy for a cholesterol test, alternatively you can book an appointment if you wish for some reassurance.
