Benefits of quitting smoking

Take up the benefits of quitting smoking, including:

  • Reduced risk of heart disease, stroke, vascular disease and respiratory disease

  • Your sense of taste and smell improving

  • Healthier looking skin

  • Improved lung function, leading to reductions in any cough, wheezing or other breathing problems

  • Better for those around you, such as second hand smoking.

Preventing harm to others

Stopping smoking not only benefits you, but also helps the health of your friends & family around you.

Second-hand smoke

Stopping smoking means that you're no longer putting others at risk through second-hand smoke (passive smoking). This benefits babies and children, pregnant women & those who are vulnerable

When those around you breathe in your second-hand smoke – what we call passive smoking – not only is it unpleasant for them, it can damage their health, and when exposed to second-hand smoke regularly, they are more likely to get the same diseases as smokers, including lung cancer and heart disease.

Pregnant women exposed to passive smoke are more prone to premature birth and their baby is more at risk of low birthweight and sudden infant death syndrome (cot death).

Young children are at higher risk of breathing problems, asthma, and allergies who are exposed to smoke in their home.
